Oh wow, welcome to Texas! We struggle with summer watering as well. The best advice we have is to check the soil moisture in the morning by sticking a full finger into the ground. If it is moist or saturated, no extra watering is necessary (as over-watering can be just as harmful). If you find the soil dry, focus your hose at the plant base and water for 10 full seconds in the AM (preferably before 7am). City water rules during the summer vary, so be sure that its not a restricted time or day in your area.
If you have any potted plants, they need a little extra H2O more frequently as the drainage makes it difficult for the soil to retain moisture.
Soaker hoses or drip irrigation penetrates the soil at a deeper level which can prevent evaporation during those 100 degree days. If you have any questions, feel free to email us. Best of luck to ya!

You bet! Hays & lawn clippings are tricky as they don't last long (and often contain weed/grass seeds). We see the most luck with pine straw which holds up quite well over time while also protecting soil moisture levels. If you are looking for veggie bed mulches, 2-4 inches of leaves work wonderfully. They decompose a little more slowly and benefit the soil immensely. In addition to these, compost is also great as well as peat moss. For more long-lasting options in flower/native plant beds, turn to untreated wood chips- the bigger the better. Good Luck!

Great question- we see these guys sucking the life out of ripe tomatoes all over Austin! They are called leaf footed bugs. The best way to keep these guys at bay is to pick them off when you see them on any tomatoes (or eggplants, even sunflowers!) then prevent further attacks by applying diatamaceous earth, or DE, wherever they congregate. Re-apply after every heavy rain. Hope this helps!
